What will this season hold for Spurs?
So, the new Premier League kicks off tomorrow lunchtime at White Hart Lane as Spurs take on the obscenely wealth Man City. It’s hard to say whether I am looking forward to it. On one hand it seems ages ago since I was at the Lane, and last season really was one of our most successful in recent years. On the other hand, it doesn’t feel like we’ve had much of a break from football with the World Cup this summer. Despite England’s muted performance, I enjoyed the WC despite it being far from a classic tournament. Regardless of how I feel, the money-machine that is the Premier League seemingly trumps the international game these days and is back.
So, as I head down early tomorrow to pick up my season ticket and the game I will probably wondering what this season has in store for Spurs. I’m surprised that Redknapp hasn’t been more active in the transfer market other than his sole signing in Sandro. To effectively challenge in Europe and the domestic league the squad needs depth and quality. We have a reasonable enough bench but I’m not sure we’re robust enough to grind out a result on Saturday following a midweek game in some corner of Europe. I really hope I am proved wrong.
For me, success this season will consist of finishing in the top 4 again or doing relatively well in the Champion’s League, should we make it to the group stages. There’s no way we can achieve both which begs the question of where we should focus our efforts. What is the point of finishing 4th one season, only to fail to achieve it the next one (apart from the chance to hear the hallowed CL music reverberate around WHL)? A measure is of success should surely be consistency – consistency in domestic league and cup, and European competitions like our friendly rivals Arsenal have achieved in the last 10 years. And that can only come from investment in the squad, a new stadium and some stability in the running of the club. I feel like we are making some in-roads in these areas and hopefully this season is the beginning of that journey.
