Tuesday Tune: The Demos
Today I am going to post a couple of tunes which , for one reason or other, we never finished. I am going to focus on 2 songs, there are many more, but I feel they are companion pieces in a way.
The first one is called Hope Forever. This was going to be our Eurovision song. I am a big fan of Eurovision, and every year there is at least a couple of tunes which are absolutely knock out. Kyri and I decided that we could do way better than ‘My Time’ which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and sung by that bird who replaced Keisha in the Sugababes. That was a staggeringly crap song.
So we sat down, and thought, what makes a good Eurovision tune? It needs a key change, maybe even 2. It needs wholly cheery outlook, about being part of a group, and being friendly to everyone. It needs either some ethnic feel, or something ultra poppy. I foresaw the stage production being like a Flaming Lips gig, with ticker tape, people in animal costumes, lights being swung around, basically all out chaos, with people having fun.
So I wrote the song called Hope Forever which I felt encapsulated those very ideals. Kyri got the pop hook just right, but we never finished it, which is a shame as I think if we got some English band to perform, it could be amazing!
The second piece was called ‘The Day after The End of the World’ and was about just that. I had been reading Cormac McCarthy at the time, and Kyri is obsessed with the end of the world. I was thinking, how, after we all disappear, it might not be the worst thing in the world. Sure stuff will need fixing, but things will continue, and it will be ok. I was being obviously quite fatalist, but I had become bored with this stereotypical idea that Armageddon would be horrible, and afterwards the world would be ruined. Nature recovers from disasters, things evolve to take their place. You look at the Dinosaurs being wiped out, and we came after it. When we go, we will be replaced and life goes on. Motorways will be reclaimed, buildings will collapse and from new hills, and everything will be ok.
I think the tune Kyri came up with had a really nice bounce to it, but also that classic sad / happy dynamic I have mentioned previously. Enjoy
