Tuesday Tune - 4

Right, I am unsure which Future Farmer song to post today. I don’t want to just do my favourites, and I don’t want to seem to favour a vocalist or style. So today I am choosing a song which was a full on collaboration between Kyri, Alex and myself.

It is a song called 4, and it is about the seasons, but personified as a lover. I wrote it as a very self contained set of lyrics, and I meant it to be upbeat. I had been accused of writing miserable stuff, so it was a conscious choice to be cheery. I also wanted a song that had the phrase ‘goddamn’ in it, I don’t know why, I just think it is a very percussive phrase and has great impact in a chorus.

Prior to this song, we had been rhythm guitar focused and this was the first song which was keys led. That is not to say there weren’t keyboard in tracks prior to this, or solely keyboard based songs, but this was the one which we felt was ‘led’ by the instrument.

As demonstrated in Sadako the week before, we were experimenting with layering and stereo, and the same can be said of this song. We had a lead guitar in the back ground as opposed to rhythm for the first time, and a great little keyboard solo towards the end. Also, it was a debut of sorts for Kyri to sing.

Kyri at this point was using Logic to record his stuff at his, and Alex was using Soundforge at his. We were able to easily merge the two, and as Kyri became more adept in recording techniques we were able to do far more interesting things. I will post these songs later, but next week I will share a song from what I like to call the ‘4 Track Years’ where through using Korg D4 I bought, we stripped our sound right back.

But today is all about the song 4. Enjoy
