Transfer merry-go-round
No blogs from me recently as was on holiday last week (more on that later this week). I was back in time for the transfer deadline day yesterday, which is always interesting if you’re a football fan (unless you support Arsenal, in which case you don’t have to worry safe in the knowledge there won’t be any signings).
I followed most of the day on the minute by minute coverage on the Guardian and BBC sites, as well as having Sky Sports News on in the office, looking for any Spurs-related transfer news. SSN also seemed to expect some movement as they had a reporter based at our Chigwell training ground for the whole day.
By all accounts Spurs’ transfer policy was to run around with an open cheque book trying to sign a Spanish striker, any Spanish striker. The list of players from La Liga we were linked with was quite ridiculous: Sergio Agüero, Diego Forlán, Fernando Llorente, Guiseppe Rossi, Luís Fabiano... Sid Lowe, the Guardian’s Spanish football correspondent summed it up well this morning:
As it turned out, we signed no-one on transfer deadline day much to my chagrin. When you consider Chelsea and Liverpool’s much publicised signings, it seems Redknapp and Daniel Levy have made a major error considering they will be both pushing for a top four finish. While they have strengthened, we have not and I fear it will cost us the chance of Champion’s League football next season.
How did the club let this happen? It is clear that a striker was identified a while back as a necessity. I guess that is what happens when you leave your signings to the last day rather than trying to get them done earlier in the month. Just to be clear I’m not advocating Spurs spending crazy money on transfers or breaking the wage structure to bring in superstars – I’d rather the club remained financially stable. However the fact that we weren’t able to secure any of our transfer targets is both worrying and hugely disappointing. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite us at the end of the season.
