Thoughts on Beckham

So our manager Harry Redknapp has been quite vocal in the last couple of weeks about signing David Beckham on loan from LA Galaxy despite having never seen him play in the MLS, nor is he aware of his current condition. Personally, I can't imagine the club would sanction a move for such a player without doing their homework first.

From a purely footballing perspective I cannot see the logic of this signing for the team. We're having a good season, and despite the recent loss to Everton away are in pretty good form. Currently sitting 4th in the Premier League, we're still in with an extremely outside chance at making a run at the title. Why upset the apple cart with a high-profile signing like this? Agree we need to strengthen, but in the forward department. Will Beckham, for the two months he is potentially here, make us a better side? I'm not sure he will. We already have a lot of midfielders at the club, even with Bentley shipped out on loan. Do we really want to pay a player close to £100k a week to come on for 10-15 minutes for about 10 games?!

The "he's been there, done it" argument doesn't wash with me either. Beckham is a player in the twilight of his career who played at the very top level nearly five years ago. Anyway, we have drafted in Gallas who has experienced top-level football more recently who can hopefully offer the same level headedness.

I'd probably welcome Beckham to the club if he was coming in on a longer term contract as a player-coach. Someone who could work with players like Lennon to improve technique or with the rest to improve their work ethic and professionalism. From the sounds of his parent club, that is highly unlikely to happen.

Obviously I would be happy to be proved wrong!
