Random thoughts
I feel that of late things I have written have been a tad formulaic. I have written from within a comfort zone, and as a result they may not have been that interesting. So today is a bit of a scatter gun blog.
- The Fukishima Nuclear Power plant has gone into meltdown. So it is like Three Island and Chernobyl, yet weeks have passed since the original incident, and you can’t find anything on the front pages of any of the news websites. Why is this? Do people really not care anymore? Or do news broadcasters think people get brain fatigue if told about the same thing too much and so have moved on to a new kind of terror? I want to do a more in depth blog about nuclear power in a bit, but I need to do a bit more reading on the subject before I can.
- I see John le Carre has withdrawn from the Man Booker International prize because, and I quote: ‘I do not compete for literary prizes and have therefore asked for my name to be withdrawn’ I saw him read at the recent World Book Event in Trafalgar Square, which was great. Listening to someone read something they have written, they have an intimate knowledge of cadence and tempo. I don’t know why someone would voluntarily withdraw though. I respect him for doing it, but I feel suspicious of the reason behind it.
- It is India vs Pakistan today in the cricket. Call Centres around the world have ground to a halt. Southall, Neasden, Bradford, Birmingham, Leicester etc must be like ghost towns. I hope for general utilitarian reasons, that India win. 1 billion being happy vs a significantly smaller number of Pakistani’s just makes sense. That and I don’t think I could handle seeing how sad and angry the reverse result would make my dad.
