Organ-ised chaos
BBC Breakfast with Sian and Bill is incredibly formulaic sometimes but I still watch it this morning nevertheless. What’s the alternative, Daybreak?
This morning they featured a story about making the organ donation list in the UK, an opt-out system rather than the opt-in one we currently have. This seems like a no-brainer to me. As it currently stands I imagine there huge effort (time and money) that goes in to getting people to join the organ donation list. Whilst this is has undoubtedly been successful, there is still a very long list of people waiting for transplants.
A lot of this comes down to human nature. I imagine that a lot of people have no issue with donating their organs once they die but haven’t got round to signing up to the list, let alone carrying a card saying as much. Imagine if how many people the NHS could recruit if we moved to an opt-out system? Surely this would lead to more lives saved. All for the inconvenience of a few who don’t want to take part. Admittedly the government would have spend money on communicating the new system, but for my mind this would be money well spent.
And just for the record, I am happy for all of my organs to be donated – yes, even my eyes! Hopefully this public statement won’t encourage some mental of Scottish-Mauritian descent to come and finish me off with the purpose of organ harvesting.
